Getting a "Cannot Access Save Data" error? READ THIS FIRST!

You are trying to play a newer game that isn't supported by the official R4 firmware. The last official firmware version is nearing a year in age and more and more games are going to have this problem.

There are fixes for this. You have two options:

1. Manually patch your problematic games: viewtopic.php?f=34&t=75

2. Use YSMenu instead of the old official firmware: viewtopic.php?f=16&t=1957

YSMenu may or may not run the game, but it is in active development, so these compatibility bugs are still being fixed. It's also less of a hassle than patching your games all the time.

Me either, but I use YSMenu.

Lots of people using the R4 are though (judging from the number of posts we get).

I had this issue on the R4DS but it worked ok on the SDHC.

That's because the SDHC firmware is slightly more up-to-date than the discontinued R4 firmware.

I did all this and now it kind of works, but after chose 'New game' the screen just goes black. I'm playing Chinatown Wars. Help?!

I tried the method for patching the ARM 7 file. Nothing. I tried the game, patched and unpatched, on the 1,18 firmware and the YSmenu firmware.

Game always boots up, never saves.

The game is Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Echoes of Time

Hmmm... are you using the most up to date cheat.dat file, with the piracy bypass enabled?
